Many bars and clubs in the Washington area have outdoor patios and decks.
But at Air, which is held on Friday and Saturday nights in the spacious
courtyard of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center,
almost everything -- including a dance floor, multiple bar stations and
lounge furniture -- is open to the elements.
Air made a hugely successful debut last summer, but this year's opening
was delayed for weeks because of the construction of Aria -- a new Italian
restaurant replacing the defunct jordan's in the Reagan Building. But
there's a silver lining: Aria adds a new indoor component to Air, meaning
the outdoor event won't be canceled when rain is in the forecast (as happened
several times last year). Aria also removes the biggest gripe about Air's
location: Patrons had to go through a metal detector every time they needed
to use the bathrooms inside the Reagan Building. Now they'll be screened
before they enter Aria and that's it.
In another change, the music on Friday and Saturday will be very similar
-- "a mixture of retro, hip-hop, house and dance," says promoter Howard
Kitrosser. Last year, Friday focused on hip-hop, R&B and soul, while Saturday
was a mixture of house, disco, hip-hop and '80s. The DJs, though, differ
night to night. Friday features local DJ Enferno, who won the prestigious
national DMC DJ competition last year and finished second at the world
championships, and Christine Moritz, recently of Eighteenth Street Lounge.
Saturday brings DJ Gaurav down from New York City; he'll be joined by
special guests.
Those who get on the guest list through www.airclubdc.com pay $10 between
9 and 11; everyone else pays $15 all night. Dress is "summer casual" --
leave the shorts and sports sandals at home, guys, but you can wear dressy
or fashionable sneakers and T-shirts.
